Marvin the Robot

Marvin (Mobile Autonomous Robotic Vehicle for Indoor Navigation) is a mobile robot developed at the Robotics Laboratory University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. This platform consists of a differential drive, the bumper to the basic operational security, planar laser scanners at the front and rear obstacle detection, belt ultrasonic sensors to detect the jutting edges, such as tables, web camera and another fast laser scanner at a height of one meter from root-free microphone and a stereo system, localization of sound sources. Sin control system behavior follows an approach based on your skills and, depending on the strategy for mapping 2D geometric and topological.

While the transport systems are available on the market, particularly on the basis of planned or regular journeys, Marvin can respond to dynamic changes in their environment, to change, of course, without interference or the risk of collision exists. Even more important is its ability to unknown structured environment for the creation of the card. Extracted topological map is the basis for the transportation problem, and contributes to the intuitive user interface (for example, to the city). Given the flexible structure and the future extensions of the software is easy. For example, the “intelligent” robot may install script service, maintenance and security on the basis of the actual location information.

In the industrial environment for well-defined conditions for carrying out the tasks at work or home environment for further research on the modeling environment, particularly the aspect of constant changing world. For example, for the provision of information on such things about everyday life, the exact knowledge of its position as the person who needs this information is necessary.

In the long run, such a system can be in care for older people in the environment, such as the Declaration on the personal hygiene. Standard tasks in this case, the amount, the control of medicine, search and transportation of the equipment to alert rescue services. Despite the growing demand in this area, it is clear today is not yet on the market that can perform complex tasks independently and reliably.

To meet this need in the future, new methods and technologies developed in the Robotics Research Laboratory obstacle avoidance, independent investigation of the internal environment (environmental modeling and mapping, finding the locations of potential interest), and intuitive user control. All these methods are implemented and extensively tested, the robot Marvin.

Mechanical design was created by Marvin RRLab based on a system of aluminum profiles in Norco. The sensor consists of two laser scanners for the patients, ultrasound sensor bar, stereo camera and microphone system. DSP specially designed for electronic modules for connecting sensors and motors to the computer. Software for traffic control, autonomous research and environment based on the methodology of behavior-based control to ensure reliable, flexible and easily expandable structure.
